A Succesful Mindset
Like many of you, I was disappointed to see Lindsey Vonn crash in the Olympics this year. Over the course of her career, the 41-year-old has been the constant picture of resiliency in sports. Countless crashes, injuries, and surgeries have meant long hours of physical therapy and recovery on her part. In the Olympic crash, she fractured her tibia. Following a self-described successful third surgery, she stated, “Success has a completely different meaning than it did a few days ago.” While the crash was a setback, I’m confident it will not be the end for her. She is the epitome of resiliency in sports.
How does one find resiliency like that? How do we bounce back, rise to our best form, and move forward when life is hard? Many of you will remember the words of Dr. Paul (my father-in-law, primary physician, and contributing author in Choose Your Best), "Focus on your mind. We’ll take care of your body, you have to control your mind, or you won’t be the same person on the other side of cancer." Those are the words that prompted the MIND Method. The breakdown of the Method is as follows.
MIND
Mindset – Your mindset matters more than you realize. While mental health is a legitimate issue in life, we often miss just how important our mindset can be to our overall health.
Intentional Action – We can’t just hope our way to resiliency. Some practical steps need to be taken. Making this Method clear, concise, and memorable is part of the idea. Know what you need to do and take the action steps.
Network – We all need a network of people we can rely on. I’m with some of those people this week on vacation. Friends and family who helped to ensure my recovery were critical in my healing and health.
Disciplines – I love this quote by F.M. Alexander, “People do not decide their futures, they decide their habits and their habits decide their futures.” Your disciplines matter. Engage them, practice them, and you will be a better person.
Lyndsey Vonn reminds us that we don’t have to let the adversities, challenges, and crashes of life determine success. We are the ones who determine what success will look like in our lives. In Choose Your Best, we explore the MIND Method and discuss ways in which you can do just that! Choose your best!
